Motherboard is a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3449#ov

Computer was built about 4.5 years ago. Late last year the graphics card (Radeon 9800 Pro All-in-wonder) stopped working and about a month later the power supply (Corsair AX-850) stopped working.

So I am going to just replace the Graphics card and the power supply.

Was wondering if I could use a Radeon R9 270X ?

Thanks

I don't see why not. Your motherboard has PCIe 2.0 x16 slots, and the 270X is compatible with that version of PCIe. If that's the only card you'll be running on that board (i.e. no Crossfiring of two GPUs), be sure to install it in the PCIEX16_1 slot, though.

Should work. Occasionally older systems can have weird compatibility issues with PCIE3 video cards, but it should be doable.

Thanks for info ; I'll be getting a R9 270X soon.

My old power supply that is kaput is 850 watts. What is the least wattage power supply I can make do with and still run the machine comfortable?

Running Core i7-950 3.06 GHz 8M Cache
Western Digital Caviar Black SATA hard drive and a Kingston SSD.
Liquid cooling
Memory is 12 gigs of Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600
