Can I use a LCD monitor as a HDTV for my PS3?

For some reason games state they will not play in full 1080p if the monitor is not hdcp capable. For Blu-ray movies, that's one thing. But for games? I don't know why, but that's what the packaging says.

Most likely his monitor isn't high enough res for 1080p
Games will play on any monitor, hdcp or not. The only difference is the maximum resolution the games can display at.

This is full the extent of my knowledge:

I only have two PS3 games, one's maximum resolution is 720p and does not state any hdcp requirements on the packaging. The other game says it supports all HD resolutions, 480i/p, 720p, 1080i/p with a footnote that says "Video output in Full HD 1080p requires an HDMI cble and a 1080p native display with an HDMI input supporting HDCP."

I have an hdcp 1080p monitor, and the one plays at 720p and the other plays at 1080p.

I guess another note to answer the thread's original question, the LCD monitor must support HD resolutions, 480i/p, 720p, 1080i/p. For instance, I can hook my ps3 up to my 24" Gateway monitor and display any of these resolutions, but not to my 19" Acer monitor without major headaches (if even possible).
