can i use a crossover cable for xbox to router?

just got an xbox for my bday...will probably mod it once i find the time to do research and such. but quick question: can i use a crossover cable to hook up the xbox to my linksys 54g router? googled the question and saw responses saying its for xbox to xbox connections. but i know on my powerbook the nic is autosensing and can use a crossover instead of regular cat5.

Most routers today have autosensing ports. If your router has this, you can use a crossover cable.

so its dependent on the router and not the nic itself?
if so then i guess since my powerbook worked this should as well.
