i have 2 50ft cross over cables and i need to connect either 2 routers or a router and switch. i dont want to have to buy a straight through cable. can i use a cross over ?

usually crossovers are meant to connect like devices, router > router, switch > switch.

however, if your router/switch support audi-mdix (auto switching), they can use the crossover just like a straightthrough. only one way to find out 🙂

Wrong.

One cable would have pins 1,2,3,6 at one end wired to pins 3,6,1,2 at the other end. The other cable has pins 3,6,1,2 at one end wired to pins 1,2,3,6 at the other end.

The net effect would be pins 1,2,3,6 of one end of one cable connecting to pins 1,2,3,6 at the other end of the other cable. The crossing over of the pairs in one cable would cancel out the crossing over of the pairs in the other cable.
