Can I use a charger from one device, onto another device?

The input socket for the charger on my camcorder says 8.4 volts. I assume that this means that its charger had an output of 8.4 volts. Does this mean that if I find another charger for some other device that has an 8.4 output, I can use it?
Also, can I use a charger with different outputs? I would think that a charger with a higher output might damage it, but would a charger with a lower output be fine? THANKS!

What about the polarity?

As long as the voltage and polarity are the same and the MAH output is equal or greater than the requirement of the device it should be fine.

Whats polarity, and how do I find out if its the same?

Also, I am having trouble finding another charger that is 8.4. All I can find is mostly 12 volts, and some ones that are smaller than 8.4. Would these damage it?

It says that the battery is 7.4 V, but next to the input on my camcorder it says 8.4 V.

I would say, if you have to ask the questions, you're better off not taking the risk and just getting a real replacement.
