What would I be able to upgrade the CPU to if at all? It shows up as a PIII 500e. Can I just get a PIII 1ghz and stick the baby right in? I'm trying to upgrade my sister's computer before she returns to college. Thanks!

There's a chance that your mobo won't support a 1 gig because for one thing, Dell manufactured it which takes away most of the freedom that you would have in customization, and another this is that 1 gig is twice the speed of what your mobo is supporting now, dunno if the bus support will be there...

In anycase to check:

First off, what kind of a motherboard is it using? Since both are FCPGA you're set on that ordeal

I think that would the most important thing to get down is to understand the clock multiplier options along w/ the bus speeds that this baby can pull off...

Next, if this all checks out well... then you'd want to check your ram... is it comparable to your bus?

Just make sure you get all this down before opening up your case to fix up your comp... because I'm sure that it voids the warranty on the PC if you do so. proceed w/ caution. Good luck

ok, i was looking around and it seems the 1ghz only comes in the 133mhz bus variation. the fastest non-eb (I assume eb = 133mhz and e = 100mhz) was the 850mhz. Will this chip work as long as the chip is 100mhz bus and FCPGA (flipchip)? Thanks!

From Dell's web site:

Microprocessor type
Dimension Lxxxr
Intel® Pentium® III microprocessor that runs at 500, 550, or 600 MHz internally and 100 MHz externally, or a Pentium III processor that runs at 600, 667, 733, 800, 866, or 933 MHz, or 1 GHz internally and 133 MHz externally, or 1.1 GHz internally and 100 MHz externally

System chip set
Dimension Lxxxr and Lxxxcx
Intel 810e chip set

System clock
Dimension Lxxxr
100 or 133 MHz (matches external processor speed)

So it sounds like if you don't mind upgrading the RAM, which is dirt cheap right now, you can go with any PIII.
