my mom lives 4 hours away from me and my cellphone is on her plan. I want to upgrade my phone, but in the past they have insisted that she be present for the upgrade. I don't feel like going home until Thanksgiving, but I want a new phone.

anyone have any experience with this? I am on Sprint

can she like call do it over the phone? she could go and get a new phone for me and then ship it, but that means I am without a phone for a few days which would suck.

thanks!

They will definitely have to call her, but in the past they haven't needed the person to be physically present.

Right, paying $70/mo for your own plan when you can add a line for $20/mo or whatever for a family plan makes a lot of sense.
Renting your own place for hundreds a month instead of staying in your parent's basement makes a lot of sense as well.

Independence ain't cheap.

um log onto your cell phone service provider website using your parents login credentials and order a cell phone online.

Not even close to similar. There's no difference at all in the service provided with cell phones if you're on a family plan, whereas living by yourself is entirely different.

No difference huh? The bill goes where? The name on the bill is who? Are you still on your parent's insurance?

Not sure where insurance came from, but no.

I am however still on the family's cell phone plan and not afraid to admit it. I pay them for the ~$20/mo because I simply am not going to throw away another $50/mo for absolutely no reason.

I live on my own and have no other financial obligations whatsoever to my parents. But I'm not going to throw away money just to have my name on a piece of paper so that people can't judge me and call me dependent.

Besides, the OP is still in school so I certainly wouldn't feel bad about that.

I understand where you're coming from but if you're only paying $20/mo you're getting off easy. Family plans start at a much higher price than individual plans and if you're only paying the cost of adding an extra line, you're not paying your fair share. You should really pay (total monthly cost)/(number of lines). So if the family plan is currently $120/mo for, say, 3 lines, you should be paying $40, not $20. And don't forget tax.

You know, you could always call Sprint Customer Service and ask them about the situation.

I came in here to post this..

Seriously, why do people ask this kind of stuff every day on ATOT. The replies take longer on here, and they are less likely to be correct.

Can't you just do it online if you sign in with her account? Shipping is usually pretty quick with these cell phone companies.

I was in the same situation. All you need is basic account information (Name, address, phone number) and the last four digits of the owner's social security number. For Verizon at least.

Should have clarified, but I do pay my share, which is 1/4. Still, the total cost is only $20. It saves me money and it saves my parents money.

Usually it's b/c people are afraid to talk to others on the phone.

Add to the fact that this is a tech/geek site, your typical poster is probably even more lacking in social skills.

or I had 2 minutes of free time before class so I made a post and then I can check the answers when I have 2 more minutes of free time?

sorry I didn't schedule an hour of my time to sit on hold and talk to customer service and get many different answers depending on what rep I talk to

sorry I wanted personal experience

Sprint Customer service takes that long to answer? That really sucks.
At least you had a legitimate reason for posting here then!

Ive never spent more than 2 minutes waiting to talk to a VZW Rep.

For ATT, you can add yourself as an authorized user or you just need to know the primary user's name, address, and ss#.

this.

actually, if you call them and go through telesales to have your phone shipped, go through it as if you were upgrading your moms phone, and when you actually get the device shipped to you (they'll ship it anywhere in the USA for free), call them to activate it, but on YOUR number. i did this with my dads upgrade and it worked like a charm back when i had sprint. they even told me that its the easiest way to use another family members upgrade for your line.

Who is the carrier? For Verizon, they just called me (the plan owner) when my brother wanted to do something to his phone, think I might have had to verify some info over the phone to confirm I was the owner.
