I have a toshiba satellite 1410 laptop that has a 1.7ghz celeron in it.

As you can imagine, the performance certainly isnt stellar, but it is enought for internet and word processing, but not for games.

Then i began seeing mobile cpus for sale, and i began wondering. Is it easy to upgrade the laptop's cpu? Or is it soldered in it? Up to what processor can i go?

I do not think heat will be an issue since the fan is rarely on, even on high cooling.

Try to rip it apart and see if the CPU looks like a normal P4 (minus heatspreader) or if it's some other kind of package.

It uses a mobile CPU, the P4-M not the mobile P4 (low power desktop CPU). You should be able to put up to a 2.4GHz P4-M or mobile Celeron in that model. We keep a 1.7GHz P4-M for testing purposes and it works fine in that model. The 2410 series goes up to 2.0GHz, so you will at least have proper BIOS support for that speed/stepping (Intel 2.0GHz P4 SL6FK C1).
