I am trying to figure out how to speed up my computer - it is a gateway GP7-700. I'm pretty sure the CPU is a plain old P3-700. I am not sure how to identify the motherboard type.

Can anyone help me figure out what the fastest CPU is that I can put in this board?

Look for BIOS updates on their website. Get a FC-PGA-Slot 1 converter. On my ABIT-BH6 only supported up to a 400 PentiumII but with a BIOS update I can now get it to a maximum of 11.5x100 for 1.15GHz.

I doubt he has a Slot One motherboard with that P3 700, it's likely a flip chip.

First step is to ID the motherboard, and then find out the max. CPU speed it supports (may need a BIOS update to accomodate higher speeds). I'd guess it's probably an OEM Intel motherboard, so overclocking is not an option. Thus, the max. CPU upgrade without changing to a new motherboard, would be to move to a 1GHz P3. Provided there is support/BIOS upgrade to support, for 1GHz CPUs on the current motherboard from Gateway.
