I have an old IBM Thinkpad 600E with a 400mhz proc. Is it possible to replace the mobo/processor with a newer one, say the T-20, and have a bigger better deal????

If you think this is a stupid question it probably is but I ask because I don't know. 🙂 for evidence of this just look at my other posts.

Thanks in advance.

Short answer is probably not.

Notebook motherboards are generally very specific to the type of machine they were made for. The 600 Series is a bit smaller than the T2x series that replaced it, and the external port configurations are very different. Thus, I do not think the mobos are interchangeable at all.

A processor swapout may be possible, since the 600X series accomodated the first mobile Pentium III processors based on the coppermine core. However, you would need to find out if your BIOS supports Pentium III processors and if the processor is socketed or not.

A socketed CPU can be replaced by removing the heatsink and pulling up the retention lever much like in a desktop mobo. However, a socket takes space on the mobo, hence many manufactures chose to solder the CPU to the system board, making it non replaceable.

Sell your IBM TP600 online, while it still worth some money. You should be able to get about $500-$600. Use the money and get yourself a T40 if possible.
