Can i trust Refurbs?

How good are refurbished items? Anyone have any experience w/ reburbs? Which components to buy or not to buy in refurb condition? Please provide info.

I'm interested in purchasing refurb items @ Newegg.com

I won't touch refub'd comp. parts.

Comp. parts are too delicate. I have to wonder how much they get beat up by people handling them and fixing them just to be sold as 2nd hand (and low profit) parts.

Just my take on refubs.

Both my 21" monitors are return-from-lease refurbs, and the two of them cost less than one new one.

I figure if a monitor has been working fine for two or three years in daily use, it's probably good for five or six more.

Refurbs from NewEgg are a hit and miss. Only good refurb I bought from NewEgg was Liteon DVD drive. I have bought a case w/PSU, PSU was bad, but they credited me $20 for the PSU. An Abit MB which was missing a capacitor, 1800+XP which was dead. But since their warranty is so good its worth the risk unless you need the part to work as soon as you get it. After my expereince I have come to the conclusion I will no longer purchase refurbished CPUs and Motherboards as these are the most dependent part of the computer.

Yep, moving parts and anything that you can destroy with electrostatic discharge I stay away from... oops, that rules out the majority of PC products 😉

I don't mind buying some items refurbished.
CPU - No
MB - No
RAM - No
Video card - No
Sound card - No
Speakers - No No
HD - No
FD - Sure, why not
CD-ROM or RW - No (except from Plextor)
Printer - Yes (from great vendor or HP)
Keyboard - Sure, why not
Mouse - Yes again
Monitor - ???
Digital Camera - I think not

Well I bought my first refurb item recently(Refurb Shuttle AK31A), and it worked, but it was locking up hard all the time in any OS (even XP Setup) so I have returned it to Newegg.

I just recently got a refurb Abit KG7-Raid from newegg. Looked like a return. I received all the goodies that came with the retail board. Works great. Your milage may differ. Just make sure you run whatever you buy good and hard for the first 20 days or so so you can return it within the 30 day limit.

I just bought a refurbished Asus P4S333 motherboard from Newegg last week for $40 shipped. It installed without a hitch, and the system is running stable with a 1.6@2.133. It was my first experience with buying refurb, and the results were great.

I only bought one refurb from newegg, a Tyan Tiger MP, and it didn't work. 🙁

Here's my NewEgg.com refurb theory: It's an excellent way for them to test to see if what they got RMA'ed back to them really doesn't work. They sell it to you at cost, you test it out for them. If it doesn't work, you send it back on your dollar and they send it back to the mfg if possible. If it does work they have only lost out on shipping it to you, which is much cheaper than paying someone to test the stuff.

I've ordered a couple refurbs from newegg. The refurb Antec PP660B looks great except it didn't come with a power cord (they did give me a $10 credit, though) but I haven't tested the PSU yet. The $5 generic black scroll wheel mouse works fine. The refurb Lite-On 32x12x40 black CDRW I order arrived as a bare drive - no Nero, no data cord, no installation guide or screws (sent e-mail to newegg CS tonight) - but I haven't had a chance to test it yet, will probably do so this weekend. I also have a refurb Seaget 'cuda IV 80GB HD on its way that should be here Monday. I'll post with more info on these items as I get test them out.

i bought two refurb ecs k7s5a's tw oweeks ago. flawless 🙂 the only thing i noticed about them that was bad was the boxes. just looks like someone dropped the box on a corner. but who cares about the box as long as the mobo works (which it does).

I know its been a while, but I've finally tested everything. The mouse, HDD, and CD-RW all work great, but the CD-RW didn't come with any software, so I'm gonna RMA it for a refund. The PSU in the case is dead, but newegg is letting me RMA just the PSU (GO NEWEGG!!), instead of the whole case.

I have 3 computers built from all refurbished parts. I have had ZERO problems at all.

And the cost was signifigantly less than buying new parts.

I generally stay away from refurb's, but it's really dependent on what part of the item was actually corrected/repaired. I'm currently running a refurb'd 8hka+ from newegg and it hasn't given me any problems.

Well, I agree with the idea, try it, risk it. You might make out like a champ (like I usually do through Crutchfields Scratch & Dent Specials), but my recommendation is to NOT get refurbished LCDs. Chances are not in your favor that it will be ok. Chances are it'll have dead pixals or something, I'd imagine that would be the majority of returns for them. Just my 2cents

I got my Abit BG7 from newegg for $88 shipped. Runs my 1.6a at 2.4 ghz! So far no problems but I guess it can be hit and miss with refurbs.
