Can I transfer XP to another PC? - Not what you think!

Sounds straightforward, right? Retail: Yes, OEM: no.

Problem is I have neither!

I obtained Windows XP Pro from my University who, rather than just get Microsoft Educational software, got a volume license for their students. I'm certainly not complaining as it means the university gives us the software for free, and we get full versions.

This disc (Part# E85-00289) is stamped with "Windows XP Professional - Not for Retail or OEM Distribution - Unlicensed Software: Illegal without separate license from Microsoft".

The disc is 100% legal as, being a student, I am covered under their volume license agreement.

I just need to know if I can transfer this XP installation to another machine, since the one I originally installed it on is currently running Linux. I tried searching all over the place on Microsoft's site and Google, and I cannot find an answer, as everything talks about the difference between retail and OEM, not unlicensed.

I'm optimistic that I can transfer the installation, since it certainly isn't OEM software, but a bit worried since it's not exactly considered "retail" either.

Does anyone know if this is possible? Or am I locked in like with an OEM version

I am pretty sure that Student versions can be moved to another computer by you. But, you are only licenses to use it as long as you are a student. You do have the COA and key, right?

Ask your educational institution. When we went to Vista, we could only get the upgrade, which is useless if you want to build a computer from scratch. Not only that we had to pay for the DVD that the operating system came on, but it is worthless. I have a School (Employee) Vista Business Premium Upgrade Disk at home that I paid money for and can not even really use. I suppose I could get XP and then upgrade that. But the whole point is not to have to pay for an operating system.
