I am building a new comp and want to transfer my two data hard drives (no programs or OS -- just data). Can i transfer a hard drive from one computer to the next with out reformating the hard drive and will the new computer recognize the data on the hard drive?

data=perfectly fine. if you're running 2k or XP then they'll read both FAT32 and NTFS well, otherwise if the drives use NTFS you5ll need to convert.

No problem with data. I keep all my common data on external (firewire) drives and move them from machine to machine as needed.

Nope data isn't portable between systems you'll have to delete it all and start from scratch 😀

If you are booting from the hard drive, you may have trouble if you are using Windows. Upon installation, it assigns the corresponding drivers to your hardware. The critical, non-plug n play components such as motherboard drivers and sometimes other IDE drives may not function optimally. But, if you are simply transferring data and booting from another drive that had windows installed in that system, everything should be A-OK

Thorin, - I'm surprised - you know better than that! I have three computers and move my data drive from machine to machine with no problem at all. It is set dso that it is always the same drive letter, and programs on each machine know where to get at stash data. 🙂

Golly! I only saw one smile, and I wrongly interpreted it as a smirk. How do I make a red faced smile? 🙂

since we're on topic, what about moving a system drive to another pc with same mobo?

I'm asking cause i'm going to have to replace one of my pc's mobo for the same exact one.

And I would HATE to reformat.

Thanks
