I have an HTC One and I have to turn it up all the way to the max volume when I an listening to audible books on the subway since the ambient noise of the train is so loud. I'm worried this might affect my long term hearing. Is there any way I can measure or estimate how many db my headphones are outputting at each volume level?

You would need to buy a sound meter. Get noise cancelling earphones like corkyg said. Or get metal over the hear with noise cancelling.

IEM with good isolation. My Shures are a subway lifesaver.

Here's a good list of options under $200:

There are apps that can measure this. This is just the first example that came up in Google Play.

I've got permanent ringing in my ears, it's too late for me, haha. Been using earbuds on max volume most of my life. Probably should use over the ear headphones with noise cancelling, but not sure that was much of an option for me when I was growing up (too expensive).
