Taking the California Zephyr from Omaha to Chicago in early August. I'd like to avoid buying booze on the train because I'm sure it will be astronomically expensive. I have some limoncello I made recently. Also have some smaller flasks.

Or can I bring it on with no problems?

I'm guessing not.

I bring beer and drink it right out of the bottle every time I ride Amtrak, but this is in California. Not sure if that matters.

Take it with you, and worst case scenario, you get ejected from the train in some bumfuck town and have the makings of a road movie on your hands.
Or a torture porn.

Any time I'm on a train to or from Chicago (from one of the suburban stations) there are usually people drinking on the trains....

No shit, shirlock. He's asking whether he can openly bring/drink his own alcohol without having to spend an arm and a leg for a single drink on the train.

Yeah, should be fine. If you're worried, just be discreet about it; i.e. don't bring an 18er of Bud on and decide to start shotgunning beers in front of a family with little kids or the person checking tickets.

Well, they don't have a fvcking bar or liquor store in the trains .... these are commuter trains.... So hopefully it should be pretty obvious.....

They do serve some alcohol in the dining car, but I've seen plenty of people with their own containers on that particular train. I've ridden the Zephyr from Denver to Illinois five or six times now..

If only there were a website to answer all one's questions about taking Amtrak... *sigh*

Oh that's right; there already is... ;)

Just don't make a spectacle of yourself and be discrete.

I taken it many places and as long as you're cool about it, 98% of the people won't even know and the other 2% won't care.

UNLESS of course you happen to run into some do-gooder who's willing to do you a favor for your own good and turn ya in.

You know, kinda like some of the nibby-noses that ya see around..........

Isn't that why flasks were invented in the first place?

I bring my own to weddings, clubs, and yeah, the one time I've been on an Amtrak.

The last time I rode the train I had a bottle in a paper bag and a pepsi. I kept them on the seat next to me. No one seemed to mind.

I'm sure you have. Most commuter trains don't serve alcohol, on those commuter trains, you can bring your booze. Many of these are Amtrak trains. Unless Amtrack has "special" different rules for their trains that sell booze, they should most likely have very similar rules ..
