can I still use a IDE cable with a tiny pinch on 1 of its lines?

It's probably ok, but I'd spend the 2 or 3 dollars and get a new one, eventually.

It killed my data in the hd 2 weeks ago. All the files are gone.

Do you have a good ohm meter? Use it. Remember that 1/2 or 40 of the wires are connected to ground at one end only. Therefore you probably will get an infinite reading with every other wire if I properly understand how these are made. But the other 40 wires should have nearly identical readings to eachother.

Never seen one like that. All the UDMA 66 cables I've seen have 80 wires and 40 pins. Two wires per pin. Otherwise they wpon't fit the drive connectors.

But . . . my take on your question is simple . . . try and and see. It will just not work if the wire is broken. Then replace it.

All cables that are ATA33 or higher have 80 wires. ATA33, ATA66, and ATA100 can all use the same cable.

ata66 or higher have 80wire 40 pin. ATA33 has 40 wire 40 pin.

And yes one of the ground pins is not connected in ata66 cables to designate it as ata66.
