We need to upgrade to windows 98 so he can be online. My brother's is using our old Pentium 2 system in his dorms. Maybe it's a pentium 3, I'm not sure. Windows 95 is on it now but it seems this does not support a DSL internet connection. Can we do this for little or no money?

Thank You!

I don't think you can still buy Windows 98 SE but you can, for sure, still buy Windows ME which is a bit newer and more powerful than Windows 98 SE. But, remember, both Windows 98 SE and Windows ME are no longer supported my Microsoft (big surprise there).:|

Win95 is no longer supported,98 is waning in support, WinME is still supported. Not for long though I'm sure.

Our local Costco still carries upgrade versions of Win98SE as does Officemax, Office Depot, and Staples.

Yes you can, however if he got a P3 and minumum 256mb ram (or a P2 around 400mhz) go with Win2k instead of Win98.

The benifits of win2k over win98 are to many to list here. :)

Just can't make yourself say the XP word can ya?... Cmon give the guy a break... It's for his brother and he is busy doing school work..

I seriously doubt he is wanting to spend his weekends making 2K run nicely tweaking every system file known to man...

You DO NOT want WindowsME (it is the tool of the devil). Since your Bro is at school, he can get a copy of XP very cheap! (Just make SURE he has enough CPU to run it)

If he has at least 128 MB of RAM, he should probably be using Windows 2000 instead of Windows 98. Once you install service pack 3 and the application compatibility update from Windows Update, it works great with most games.

Have you ever used Windows 2000? Because if you had, you would know that win2k is the easiest and most stable version of windows to use, period. Windows XP is the one you would have to sit and screw with to get it to work like it should (for me, at least). If its a slower computer XP ain't gonna work out so good anyway, so why not give 2000 a shot. If he can use a different OS (Linux, BeOS) look into that as well, since you can get them for free (legally, I mean ;))
