Can I stick 8 Hard drives or 8 IDE Devices into a system?!?!

I have 4 Y's so I will have 8 - 4 pin connectors for the devices... Im figuring the Enermax 350 should be able to handle that....


I plan on sticking

16x10x40 Lite On burn proof Burner
10x Noname DVD player
4-7200 RPM 40GB 60Gxp IBM's
2-5400 RPM 80GB Maxtors

anyone think te power supply will be okay? Or are therea ny problems Im missing?

You can stick more than 8 IDE devices in your system as long as your case is big enough and PSU can handle it. 🙂



p.s. using Trios, you can have 3 HD on each channel or 6 IDE device on each IDE controller.

I don't know if your powersupply will be able to take that?

4 7200RPM hard drives and 2 5400RPM drives will suck up an enormous amount of power...

8 is all i really need.... I have two controllers on the motherboard, and two on the card, so that makes 4 controllers x 2 = 8..... I also might get a raid board, so that would be more like 6 controllers x 2 = 12... but i dont know if I can split power twice off of a power supply.... and besides, thats just plain silly 🙂... i only have 4-5.25 and 5-3.25 and one of them is a floppy so that leaves 8 spots.. and i already got some 3.5 to 5.25 adapters for the hard drives

Your PS should be able to handle, but you going to need some good cooling in that case. Especially for the HD.

i dunno if psu is powerful enough... i would think more like 400w or 450w.

Your power supply will easily handle that many drives. IDE hard drives barely break 10W's when running full bore. So long as you have decent airflow within your case, heat shouldn't be an issue either.

Also, four of these hard drives will be packed in right next to each other, is heat ever a problem for hard drives? I mean, will I damage them with heat?


2 of them will be spaced out in the 5 1/4 slots, but the other four will be packed into the 3.5 spaces right below the floppy....
