I graduated college, got a job, and am soon heading out on my own. I'm worried that my insurance is going to skyrocket, because I have 3 tickets and i'm 23 and 9 months old. I'm sure I've heard of people staying on their parents insurance until they reach the magical age of 25, but my dad says we can't do this because I'm no longer a dependent. Is he misinformed or am I?

I am 23 and still on my parents policy as an occasional driver...
I work, no longer a dependent, and I live in a different state as my parents

Personally, I'd just ride it out until you turned 25 and update your policy. Unless your insurance company is really really bored, or really really, anal, they won't come knocking on your door checking to see if you are out of college and working full time.

On a related note...I just revised my insurance policy on my '94 camry. $288 a year! And I don't turn 25 for another 6 months. Then it goes down to ~$175 a year :D

We are still using my wife's parent's insurance because we get a terrific bulk discount. I am 27 and so is my wife, and we have been independent for several years. Shouldn't be a problem.

What should I do.. I dont really understand insurance.

I'm 26 now and i'm still with my parents insurance. So if I get into accident, they would be sue and they have larger asset than me..

If I go out on my own insurance and someone sues me, they can't sue my parent right ? They can only sue the policy holder right ?

I don't know what insurance is like in the US, but here in Canada parents often encourage their kids to purchase auto insurance under their own name as young as 16 years old. In Canada your parents have to be the owner of the automobile to purchase insurance for it?.inturn they can insure the automobile as long as they hold a driver license. What could happens is that their insurance would skyrocket if you get in an accident if the car/insurance is in their name.

IMHO, you should buy the insurance in your own name to save your parent from the hassle, and you might learn to slow down because it hurts your pocket book if you get a traffic violation fine.

As a general rule you can stay on their policy if you live in the same house as them. Call the insurance company and tell them you are thinking of moving out and you wanna know what it would cost you to be on your own policy.

It really boggles me that people ask these questions on here. Call your agents and talk to them, what the heck do you think agents are for?

Hmmm, I guess that is a consideration, whose name the car is in. I'm also considering buying my car from my parents.
