Can I "slide" off a 754 heatsink?

Just wondering if that's a safer way of doing it if you didn't want to pull out the CPU at the same time.

Unlatch it and twist it back and forth while GENTLY lifting the heatsink until it pops off.

Well, on my motherboard there's like this black "cage" all the way around it (\EDIT: I mean around the heatsink). I dont' think I can really twist it, maybe only 1% each direction. Would that be enough?
