I built a mini-itx desktop a few months ago and it is running fine with WIN-10 pro, an Intel 700 series SSD and 16 gigs of ram and an Nvidia 1050 GPU on an AORUS Z390 board. I want more computing power. Can I just remove the I5 and replace it with an I7?

Depends on what the board will accept. the bios is the determining factor. That info can be found with the mfgr of the board.

That board is race ready. Heck, you can go i9 if you want to really increase the compute power.

Thanks all. My responding took so long because I blew up my system. I had to start all over again, from scratch. What happened was I had accidentally left a bios setting for go optane memory. It didn't affect anything obviously although I don't use optane memory. Intel updated the drivers for memory functioning and that new file caused my system to go bananas looking to do something to optane memory that wasn't there. It took me a while to sort this out and in the process, I completely reset my computer hoping to get it running correctly. In desperation, I went back and scoured the bios settings, deactivated the optane setting and everything came back as it should. Thanks again all. As soon as I get my pennies together I'll throw in an i7. I want it particularly for the chip based security functions.
