Help!! I'm trying to set up a serial mouse on a at pentium 166 board. Sorry for the dumb question but the oldest board i have worked with until now is a BX board. The com 1 pins on the motherboard are only 9 1 looks like 1 is broken off, the com 2 port pins on the motherbord are 10 and intact. I have 9 pin connector(ribbon) to the board and 10 pin connector (ribbon) to the board. the end of both ribbon cables are 9 and 25 pin Which ribbon cable should I use and should i use the 10 pins on the motherboard (com 2) port. i plan to do a low level format and install win 98 se will the os remember the mouse?? any help greately appreciated Mark

You write as confusing as I do. If this is a board with pins for the com/lpt ports to be hooked up via ribbons and add on ports as I think it is then there's no hard and fast rule that I know of. The good news is you won't hurt anything if you hook stuff up backwards so experimentation until it works seems to be in order.

If you low level format there's nothing left to remember anything. Win98 will see a serial mouse as soon as it's hooked up correctly though so it won't take long to find the right way to hook up the cables.
