Can I save on refurbished performance ram??

I am desperate for a new computer, am a poor high school that has been saving for two years, and now I'm desperate to spend it..... wisely.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231035This G.skill Extreme 2x512 tccd i can get this refurb for $126
Make the Jump to 2x1gig G.Skill, not tccd for $185
Crucial Ballistix, runs hot, cheap, micron 2x512 for $115
Or i can just simply go Corsair ValueRam, 1 or 2 gigs

system:

Opteron 146
Epox Ep-9npa Ultra
RAM?
Xclio 450w
WD Caviar 160gb
NEC ND-3540
6800 or 7800 from a friend

I am willing to get either of these, none are extremely pricey, but I really like the g.skill tccd refurbished for the price
- i do plan on overclocking ram to DDR500
- this is my first build, very inexperienced, currently have a sony vaio

Thanks for the advice

hey just curious if you find 2x 1gb sticks of pc3200 ram under 150$ pm me cause i am interested in getting some as well. As far as im concerned look for low cost value ram.

valueram is a good option. refurbs are usually ok by me, but ehh, it's ram....
overclocking ram is worthless. you will realize minimal performance gains. Performance ram is the worst upgrade, dollar for dollar you can spend for amd64/opterons.

I would go with the refurbished performance ram. These carry a lifetime warrenty through the manufacturer too.

I wouldn't go with value-ram because you won't know the chips they will use. You may have a hard-time adjusting your motherboard settings just to get the ram to work. Unless you get lucky and end up with a value-ram that uses micron/samsung.

wtf?
you have to be kidding.
all name brand value ram will work on 99% of motherboards. DFi Nf4 lanpartys hates corsair value ram but that's it.

all problems you will encounter with ram compatibility is a motherboard problem and there are as many people TCCD problems as people with Hynix/Samsung valuream problems.

For example ,if you buy some no name no support pos motherboard, dont expect anything special but if you have a Asus, MSI, DFI(for 99% of ram), Epox, other big name company with any big name brand valueram, you will be fine.

As long as yuo stick to the big ram companies(Kingston,G.Skill,Muskin,Corsair, OCZ, Geil, PNY,Crucial and maybe Patriot), you'll be fine.

wth? I never said that value wouldn't work.

I only said that the motherboard may need some re-adjustments in the settings in order to get it to work. For example: some value-ram uses hynix chips which only seems to like CAS2.5-3-3-5 at DD400-500. Or some value-ram may use UCCC which can never do CAS2 even at PC3200 speeds. But the problem is that you won't know what chips and correct settings your value-ram uses/likes until you try it out and identify the IC yourself.

Performance Ram usually only selects 1 type of chip for its series type so you know 100% that you are getting micron5b if you buy the 2gb ballistix or UCCC if you buy the 2gbOCZgold series. So it's easier to adjust the settings correctly since there is a known stock database for it.

well valueram would not ned these adjustments. Valueram is always rated for cas 2.5 or 3, and it will always run at the printed speeds. For example, I have a stick of kingston valueram with Samsung chips that is clearly printed on it Cas3.

Also if you have a half way decent motherboard and you set the settings to auto, all deent motherboards will set the right cas tras trp and trcd. no adjustment required. It will just read the SPD rom on the chip.

i'd vote for the G.skill 2x1 GB. AMD's like Low Latancy memory much better then more memory bandwidth. so overclocking to DDR500 is pretty much pointless, not to mention wont give you any noticable performance gains. and 2 GBs is better then 1GB, especially in gaming. more is always better actually.

at DDR500 you'd probably have to run at high timings, which means your better off using PC3200 ram @ 2-2-2-5. might aswell go with value ram too. but the price of those gskills aint half bad.
