Can I save my aging monitor?

I've had my Mitsubishi Diamond plus 71 for several years, but its starting to show its age. Over the last few monthes I've noticed a sort of shimmering towards each side of the display. It looks almost like a moire effect, but it happens with light shades instead of contrasting areas. It could even just be me noticing the refresh lines out of the corner of my eye...

I was wondering if there is someway to adjust this (focus perhaps?) to get a little more life out of my monitor. It's not incredibly bothersome, just slightly distracting.

And no, I'm not considering getting another monitor. This is by far the best monitor I have ever seen in terms of sharpness and color. The last thing I want is to get a lcd and go back to everything looking like a crayon drawing...

It may be time to pick up a new monitor. Do they still sell that make/model?

By the way, you may consider being a little more open minded, since you are asking for help. Someone may have some good advice and LCD have come a long way since you purchased your monitor.

I don't mean to be judgemental against LCD's. I would get one for a tv, but never anything I need to edit/read on. To be quite honest I have never seen any display, whether it's CRT or LCD, that is as sharp as a Diamondtron.

It's just that this little annoyance is bothering me, and I don't want to have to replace it. I don't know if it's age or focus or even nothing at all....

Actually, I'm pretty sure KDS still sells the next version of the tube at eviLMART for $108...

I've been waiting for the $60 21" version to go on sale again at officew depot

I have one of the finest CRTs made, and understand how you feel about LCDs, but the Samsung 214T is a worthy panel albiet expensive.

If it does die, and want something of the same caliber -->here

I have that same monitor for several years and it still runs good as new.

Have you tried adjusting the OSD (lots of buttons to push) ??
What driver are you using ??

It's probably time to clean the inside of the unit. The best way is either to have a tech do it for you or you can do it yourself. I used to open my crt (when I still had one) once a year to vacuum the inside. After cleaning make sure you degauss the system.

Voltage should be fine (isolated gfci circuit). I probally should clean it out. I typically have my case facing outward with the exhaust towards the monitor. I had a pair of earphones sitting on top for a few weeks, and now it's covered with dust.

How would I go about cleaning. I'm sure my air compressor would be too heavy duty, but would an air can be much better? Would a fine brush work, or would static cause any adverse effects?

In response to the driver, I was running the standard XP Plug-and-Play driver, but switched to one generated by Powerstrip. As far as I know, I've never seen a Diamond Plus 71 driver anywhere (just 70 & 72).

I've adjusted everything as best I can. I adjusted the moire cancel against a moire pattern, and then I calibrated an additional color profile.

I'm still not sure I'm not just being paranoid. Nobody else but me can ever see it, and it could just be a product of scan lines or something...

Here's the signed Diamond Plus 71 driver that I have been using for the last 4 years.

Just go to..........http://www.necdisplay.com/support/css/signedinf/files2.htm

And find Mitsubishi CRT Desktop Displays in the middle of your screen
and scroll down to the Diamond Plus 71 (TFV6708) and your in business.

This is the legal Web site. You can also google....TFV6708..the driver name.

Don't know if it'll help, so good luck...

Actually, I am almost convinced I am just noticing scan lines, but I'd still like to clean the monitor anyways. I was just wondering if anybody had anymore tips on cleaning monitors. It's one thing to toss a disassembled $20 keyboard in the dishwasher, but I wan't to be carefull with a monitor I paid $300 for.
