Can I run two versions of internet explorer?

My new work requires that I downgrade my fully patched win xp pro sp3 with IE 8 to IE 6. I have to use IE 6 because of an applet I need to work from home won't work with anything else.

Is it possible to have IE 8 and IE 6 on the same windows xp system? Any security pointers for IE 6?

No. Your best bet is to run a virtual machine with IE6 for work use.

In addition to the virtual-machine approach, here are some tips:

1) keep IE6 up-to-date on its security patches, using the Microsoft Update site or Automatic Updates.

2) run all browsers, IE and otherwise, from a non-Admin user account, even if you're in a virtual machine. how to use a non-Admin user account

3) uninstall any third-party stuff you don't actually use, such as QuickTime, RealPlayer, Sun Java, Skype, etc. Patch the remaining software to the latest versions. Try the free online Secunia checkup to help with that.

4) if possible, use a Software Restriction Policy in addition to the non-Admin user account.

Alright, I'm in my virtual xp environment and vpn as well as the GE applet are actually working (amazingly painless actually with VMware Player).

AVG is claiming it may not work properly on my virtual machine (said that at install, so I've cancelled it for now). Does AVG cause issues in virtual xp and is it really needed in this environment?

Unless you are using AVG in a realtime intercept mode (unsafe browsing); you should be able to shut it off in the VM system

That's what I thought. This is strictly to get on the intranet at work (although I do wonder about their network security sometimes...). Cheers.
