Does the Presario have an AGP or PCI-E slot?

I would get the x800XL instead, much better preformance for not much more.

If it has an AGP slot and the PSU is powerful enough, it could handle it. All you can do is try it and see. Make sure yo buy from somewhere wiht a good return policy if it doesn't work.

The X800XL has lower power requirements than the X850XT from what I have seen. I would not put any X800 or 600 series video card in with a 1.4ghrtz Athlon XP. That is a waste of money because everything will be extremely cpu limited. I would get a used 9800pro or even 9700pro etc for cheap.

Look at the PSU and make sure its amperage and rails are good enough to support the X800XL (it could be dicey)

Edit: In other words: Sell your 9800pro to him for about 100 bucks and get a nice 600 series NVIDIA or 800 series ATI card for yourself (your cpu can use the newer video card)

PSU in a compaq = pure crap.

You will certainly need a better PSU, & yeah...that card is a tad overkill for that system.

If he's planning to get a new one soon & is just using the video card to tide over, then it'd be okay, but you'll want a better PSU.

New! Crap powered systems! Just hook up your computer to your toilet, and you'll never have to waste electricity on your computer again. ;)

Yea grab a 6600gt or 9800pro, anything more would be extremely CPU limited with your current setup.
