Can i run processor and 3200 memory at dif speeds?

I know for best results the speed on both cpu and mem shuold be synchrounous, but i was just wondering if i leave my xp 2400+ at 133 (266 fsb) and get some 3200 memory and run it at 200mhz. Will this make my system unstable? or just not realise its full potential if lets say i had a processor that ran at the same speed?

Any advice would me much appreciated thanks :)

so it will be stable, just not as fast as it could be were both running at the same speed?

moeny dude, i can afford either a processor or memory..and memory would help me out more than a processor would (my games run fine, but my load times suck therefore better memory)

so i was planning to upgrade the mem first and then when i can afford (and it gets cheaper) get the the full 400 fsb CPU

would a cpu133/mem 200 be slower than cpu133/mem133

ive got generic pc2100 and was looking to get a kingston hyperx pc3200 dual channel kit

if getting that memory imporves my performance then groovy, then when i get the processor ill open her up to her full potential. :D

so my question is, is it worth me buying the kingston memory even though im not gonna run it at full speed? will running it at 200hz (while my cpu stays at 133x2) improve my system performance?

thanks for the help anyway :D

You've already stated that running cpu & memory in sync. is faster than running them async. And yet, you're asking the same question again?
If you're going to buy the hyperx pc3200, just run the cpu/mem at 200 ddr for max performance. If your cpu can't take 200 at default multiplier, just decrease it and run the cpu/mem at the highest possible speed (in sync). If your current cpu is xp2400, you have fairly a good chance it will run at 200.

ah so i can fiddle with the fsb of the processor in any combo of multiplier and fsb as long as it always equals the proper speed?

eg

at the moment its 15x133fsb = 2000mhz

so i can change it to 10x200fsb =2000mhz

and it will work?

scuse my ignorance im a newbie :)

Yes. 10x200 will be faster than 15x133 in many applications. You'll notice the difference in games (even in freecell).

Yes, you can if your processor is unlocked, and by running at 10x200, you'd see a drastic improvement in performance, compared to 15x133. Almost all 2400's will run at 200fsb, as long as the board it's on will do it. And with the Athlons, always keep your memory and processor in sync, no matter how much you have to underclock your ram. You will get much higher performance by underclocking your ram, than you will by running asynchronously.

edit: Of course, you would get even more performance by running at 10.5, 11, or 11.5x200. Mine will actually do 12x205, if I raise the vcore (processor voltage) to 1.775v, but I don't run it at that because it isn't completely stable.

thanks for the help guys

i have a a78nx e mobo, how good is this for fiddling with cpu's?

more to teh point, if i get a multiplier it doesnt like will it reboot me back to the bios?

i remember old board that if you put in a multiplier it didnt like it would zap teh mobo until your cleared the cmos with a jumper setting

nah asus nforce 2 boards rock, if it dont like your settings then just hard boot and it returns to normal

wouldnt accept 200 fsb (maybe cos memory is only 2100)

i managed to crank the processor up to 166 and the memory from 133 to 166. Nice and stable will try 200 fsb when i get my hyperx memory thru.

Thanks for the help lads
