I have recently aquired a cheap older PC and would like to know if it would be noticably better at running modern games than my 5 year old Dell laptop. It has a sligtly better spec on paper, but not sure if it would make that much difference in the real world. I am hoping to run Fifa 2015 on it for my young son. My laptop will run it, but it's a bit laggy. I don't have a monitor for the PC, it's on order so not tried installing any games on it yet. Maybe I am expecting too much...

PC spec:

Intel Core i5 3470 cpu
8gb ram
1tb HD
MSI HD7850 graphics card

My laptop spec:

Intel Core i5 M520 cpu
4gb ram
1tb HD
Ati HD 5650 graphics

Yes. Definitely. The CPU is not noticeably different from a modern i5, and the GPU is similar to an R9 270. Based on this you should have no trouble running Fifa 2015 at 60FPS on a 1080P monitor.

Not much of a contest there. The 520M is only a (35W) dual-core with HT, the 3470 is a full quad-core. Based on specs alone, that HD7850 is something like twice the performance of the HD5650M (not counting thermal limits). It also uses the GCN-architecture, so you should be able to use Mantle as a bonus... :)

Should be able to run just about anything on highest.
Maybe not with super-high framerates.
