Can I run different monitors with 2 x HD5450?

Many thanks to xtknight for his help a few years back. I picked up 4 Dell 2005FPW after speaking to him and never regretted it.

I just got a new computer with two ATI HD 5450 video cards. They each have one D-SUB and one DVI output. I got the two cards because I'm running all 4 monitors. I searched here for the answer to my question but couldn't find anything current and specific.

I love my 4 x 2005FPW, but I'm interested in trying a bigger monitor as the primary display. My question is this - can I plug i.e. a DELL U2410 or even a DELL 3007WFP-HC into the DVI output of one of the cards and have it run at its native resolution while allowing the 2005FPW which is plugged into the D-SUB output of the same card to continue to run at its native 1680x1050? I have learned what a Dual Link DVI cable is - does it make a difference if the bigger monitor I choose needs a Dual Link connection? Does that change how the card is going to output signal through the DVI output?

I'm unwilling to sell off my 2005FPW's before living with a new setup for a few days. Who knows, maybe I could get used to two 26" units, but for the time being I just want a bigger monitor as primary.

Any info is appreciated.

Either one of your HD5450 should be able to display to two independent monitors for desktop/2D functionality.

Yes, the 3007 requires a fully dual-link connection for DVI at native. D-sub or non-dual-link only allow lower resolutions, and you are hardly going to get a 3007 without making sure your card and cable are dual-link ;)

Exactly how the outputs behave with independent resolutions and refresh rate will depend a lot on driver functionality. Not sure how CCC is for multi-mon, but tweak apps like ATI Tools/ATI TrayTools/UltraMon may be able to help.

Hey betasub, thanks a lot for the reply. Yep, I checked that the cards I have will drive that monitor and it turns out that the HD5450 drives a max of 2560x1600 which is exactly what the 3007 requires, and dual link is no problem. Having said that I am really interested in a couple of 27" units.

I'll remember to look at drivers if I run into any problems. Right now I have the ATI Catalyst 10.7 installed.
