Can I run an i5 retail HSF on an E5200?

I'm replacing my old setup (E5200 @ 3.24Ghz on an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro) with an i5 750 -- I will probably be building a spare/HTPC out of the E5200, but will likely leave it at stock speeds. When looking at getting another AF 7 Pro for the i5, I noticed that it's advertised for LGA 775, 1156 and 1366. Is it then possible to run the retail HSF from the i5 on the E5200, and re-use what I have now?

I'd just check everything physically, but it's not all here yet and if I need a new HSF I'd like to order now so it will be here with everything else. I am impatient at times. :p

I think the hole spacing is different so no.

The reason some aftermarket cooler list LGA1156 and 775 is because I think they use "slots" where the pins are which allow them to slide in and out and accommodate both the 1156 and 775 spacing whereas a retail cooler would not. Since I don't have them both to directly compare, I cannot say for sure but i'm sure someone who knows for certain will chime in soon.

EDIT, see here:

Like Noctua, Xigmatek is also readying a socket LGA-1156 compatibility upgrade in the form of a bracket kit.

The kit allows for most of Xigmatek's existing coolers to work on upcoming socket LGA-1156 motherboards. It will consist of two curved brackets with two holes each, a back-plate, bolts, and coils. There will be a hole spacing of 75 mm, making LGA-1156 spacing in between LGA-775 with a spacing of 72 mm, and LGA-1366 with that of 80 mm.

I suspect you may be able to force it but I wouldn't suggest that.

Ah, bummer. I guess I'll be ordering a new HSF, then. Is there a better option than the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro in the $20-40 range, or should I just get a cheap retail HSF for the E5200 from FS/T and re-use mine?

I got my last retail cooler from the freebies thread, cost me a whopping ~$5. If I had a retail cooler for 775, I'd mail it to ya but alas, I gave them all away.

I might have 1 xtra stock cooler around here for a e5200. I'll look around and PM you if I can find it.

Yep....Found it and she's a virgin still :)

You should be able to swap the heatsinks once you find a 775 unit.

I bought an E3200 that had an all aluminum sink. My unused i5 750 sink has a copper core...both sinks were dimensionally the same so I just swapped them in the plastic cages, took all of 30 seconds.

Turns out my 775 cooler doesn't have the required adapter or whatever it needs, so I won't be able to swap anything around. I just installed the stock HSF and ordered a Coolermaster Hyper 212.
