Can I run an Alpha PAL35t off the motherboard fan connector? Any advice on installing?

I just ordered an Alpha PAL35t kit w/Sunon fan from coolerguys last night. Will I be able to run this off my Asus CUSL2 mobo fan connector, or will I need to run it off a PS connector?

yes, unless you got the delta 38CFM fan. That's the only 60mm fan I know of that pushes the mb connectors to the limit.

Shag, I ordered one too, but from coldcpu.com... On the same board you have. Waiting to get it :)

Thanks, Mike. I ordered the PAL35t with the Sunon fan, as I didn't really want to deal with the noisy delta. :)

Good to hear. Hope these things are as good as they say...

Anyone have any advice on how to install this thing? I haven't received it yet, but want to be ready for it when it comes. I've never installed an after-market cpu HSF and have never applied thermal grease, either (it comes with "1.g G47 thermal compound", whatever that means. Sounds like the Arctic Silver is the way to go, but just can't afford it. :( ).

coolerguys used to bundle mpu 3.7 thermal grease with their products(its pretty good stuff). Not sure if the stuff you got/are getting is the same or not, though.

I've had the golden orb for a few months. It's a good cooler for the money, but whenever I push my CPU to over 945mhz I get random freeze on W2K.
So I got a brand new Alpha 35t, and right now my CPU running great at 980mhz. According to the temperature reading in the BIOS, it says 35C.
Ok...here's the real tip from my own experience.

Golden Orb

The socket on CUSL2 is a bit odd. It's actually larger than others, that I had to bend (spread out) both sides of the clip to fit it on. Other than that the installing the Orb was a piece of cake. Just make sure, you work the mechanizm a few times with your hands.

Alpha 35t

I had a hell of time with this s.o.b. The first problem I faced was with the clip. There's not enough room to work with. The resistors on CUSL2 are too close to the socket! Be very careful. If possible take off the memory modules to give yourself more room.
The second problem, this is one is a killer! Those 4 plastic feet are too thick! Because of them the CPU doesn come into contact with the heatsink. Solution? Make it thinner by lapping them on a sandpaper. First cover the copper portion of the heatsink for protection then lap it in nice circular motion. How much? Just enough so that the thermal compound on the CPU is stamped "evenly" on the heatsink.

Good Luck!

Has anyone else had to sand the feet on their PAL35t?

Any advice on how generously to apply the thermal grease? Do I coat the entire top of the cpu? How do I know if I have good cpu/HSF contact?

My roommate had a half year old coppermine that was too low to make contact with an Alpha PEP66 because of the feet, so we sanded that one. On a brand new celermine and another coppermine, we didn't need to sand the feet because they just managed to fit perfect.
