It all depends on what else you are running in your box. If it is a pretty basic system, the quality 250W should do you fine. When you get multiple drives, radeon or geforce, case fans... the 300W really is preferable. If you already have a 250 and want to try it, I'd go for it. But if you are getting BSOD, and lockups/crashes, it may be your computer telling you it wants more juice. So in conclusion, if you are buying a PS right now, I'd suggest a 300W. Oh and check AMD suggested Power Supplies if you are really set on getting the 250.
I'm running my system off a 235watt power supply, though I would'nt recommend something this small. I'm getting away with it because it's a quality AOpen case/power supply, and I don't have multiple hardrives, raid controllers, ect. If you have at least 25amps on the 5+v , and 8amps on the 12+v lines you should be fine.
I'm also running a 235Watt power supply (Powerman) in my Inwin case. It seems to do alright but I am going to get a new case anyways with extra juice because I need this case for another computer.
BTW I have 2 HD's, CDRW, network card, modem, floppy, HSF, Video card fan, case fan..
If you have not bought the case yet, don't limit yourself. Get the most of what you can afford. I agree with the other posters, should work if you don't have too much in the case.
This question is like asking is it OK to drive my Corvette at 150mph on bald tires !!. Sometimes your OK but its not recommended. Power Supplies are not expensive and they provide the 'life blood' for all components of your system. Bad Power can cause so many different types of problems that you can't list 'em all. All a TBIRD asks for is good clean power and some good cooling and its one happy BIRD.
i ran my duron with more stuff and 3 case fans perfectly fine on a 250w, but i have read around that if u get an athlon, its a really good idea to get a 300w PS since it sucks more power...
You're probably still better off with a 300W PS, just in case. A 250W should work alright, but a better PS isn't that expensive, and could save you some trouble in the long run.
