Can I run a 9800 PRO without a Fan in 2D (underclocked)?

The fan on my 9800 PRO went caput. If I underclock the heck out of it, is it ok to run the card in windows without the fan for a few days until my replacement card arrives?

Thanks!

9800 Pro has a stock cooler cooler close to nothing; too less metal and too much heat.
I don't think an underclock is going to help you because you still need a fan to disperse all the heat energy stored by the heat sink otherwise, it will get hotter and hotter and you will run into trouble.

If you've got a replacement card arriving, hell yeah, make it pay for breaking on you. Hang a spare 80mm fan from it (yes, hang, using either cable ties, elastic bands, whatever) and take off the old little fan. Worked for me for a good while, even in games. Although did crash every now and then when the room was hot and far cry was going...

-yes, punish it. Maybe hang an 80 blowing at it for the time being.

I have never run a 9800 Pro without a HSF on it, but personally I think its a bad idea - even underclocked. Just my opinion, but whats worse - waiting a few days without your PC working or having to buy a new videocard because your GPU fried due to your impatience?

ATI spec'ed an active cooling solution on the 9800 Pro for a good reason, don't you think?

yeah.... they put those fans on there for full load conditions... i have a feeling that if you underclocked it well....as far as it will go and still run... that it would probably be ok.... just keep a CLOSE eye on it and if it doesnt work then put a fan on it somehow.... i used to use a TNT2 m64 that had a dinky heatsink and an even smaller fan... well the fan broke and i couldnt fine another to fit it so i just ran it w/out one.... even overclocked that badboy ran fine in UT.... ahh the days of DX7!

If you underclock it as much as possible and don't run any games, i'm not sure if it will be fine. watch the temps and try it out.
edit: try undervolting it too if possible

No it's not a good idea. There were several reports of melted fans falling off of Radeon 9800 series cards when the fans failed and the users didn't know about it. The heat from use melted the fans!

If noise is a concern, your best bet is to get an aftermarket cooler. Otherwise, you'll just have to leave the fan running.

Thanks for all the input, guys. Much appreciated. FWIW, I used to ATI Tool to clock the core down from 380MHz to 50MHz. After about the 60 mins in windows, the HSF is barely warm to the touch. In any case, I will follow your advice and will rig up some temporary active cooling. Thanks everyone!
