CAn I reinstall XP?

I have a machine that was running XP Pro until I replaced that with Win7 at its release. Now I've found that my old miniDV camcorder only has XP drivers so I can't transfer the videos I've shot in the last year to the computer for processing. I just tried installing XP on the puter for dual booting, but the machine won't boot from the XP installation CD ( I did set the BIOS for this). Is there any way I can reinstall XP on this machine? Thanks.

What model miniDV camcorder do you have?

If it uses a USB connection, you might be able to install XP in either XP Mode or a VMware Player virtual machine under Win7.

If the camera uses a firewire interface, though, this won't work as VMs don't support firewire. In this case, you could try a firewire to USB or (or even firewire to SCSI if you have a SCSI adapter) adapter - whether it would work probably depends upon how flexible the camera drivers are under XP.

The ad for panasonic drivers at runningdrivers.com is really an ad for the program "driver detective", which is the program the download link gets you for a trial, followed by purchase if you really want the driver. Problem is I can't find any confirmation on the net that Win7 drivers exist for this camcorder.

Your camcorder uses firewire to transfer video to the pc. You'll also need video editing software to transfer the clips.

The driver file at nodevice.com is for XP and earlier. Panasonic says that driver will not work in a Win7 environment. I have Win7 Home Premium so can't use XP Mode. Just downloaded VMware player and will give that a shot.

Firewire should work even without drivers. Just get a firewire card and cable to connect the camcorder. Reinstalling XP, a ten year old OS, just to get your camcorder going is not the best option. In the past I got both a PCI firewire card and a cable for less than $10. Just make sure you get the correct cable. Most camcorders probably have the mini-firewire connection, whereas most add on cards will have the full size. Windows Movie Maker has always worked really good with firewire and mini-DV, which is, let's face it, kind of ancient technology right now.

This camcorder connects via USB, not Firewire. But, if I get a Firewire card and a USB/Firewire adapter do you still think it would connect without the XP drivers?

OK, I'm feeling pretty stupid. I found the page in the manual that describes the Firewire connection and will do that. Sorry for the confusion. This is an old camcorder as I said and the manual spends many pages talking about the USB connection and drivers and very little space on transfers via Firewire so I just missed it. I've been shooting videos of our child for years and just now decided to go about editing them so this was a new topic to me even tho the camcorder is old. Hence, the ignorance. And I really appreciate all the comments that got me to finally see how to do this.

I ordered a 4p/4p cable from Monoprice before I saw the last post because the MB has a 4 pin on the back in addition to a 6 pin socket. Will this work or is the 4p/6p cable version required? Thanks.

I think the 4x4 should work, the extra 2 pins only supply power.
I have the same motherboard as you, but no 4x4 to test, I went with the 6x4.
I use an old version of MGI Videowave to transfer and do cuts, but I'm looking for something more recent, so if you're going to try Windows Live Movie Maker, please let us know the results.

Btw, I've been down the same road as you, regarding the dead end USB search for my Sony camcorder which had been in the closet for a couple years.
