I was reinstalling WinXp on my PC which has a Maxtor 40GB HDD installed as a master and an old Maxtor 13.3GB HDD as a slave. Was going to transfer data from the old drive to the new drive using drag and drop method, but somehow the slave drive now shows it has nothing but raw data and asks if I want to format the drive, have I lost all my data on the 13.3GB HDD?? If so, is there any way to recover that data?

Old drive is Maxtor, too. It has Windows 98SE as OS and was formatted FAT32.

If you did nothing to the old drive, you should be able to get your data off. Here's what I'd try; Shut down the PC and disconnect the old drive. Start Windows XP and go to the desktop. Then shut down again. Connect the old drive back up and restart the computer. For some reason this seemed to work for me when I built my latest PC. I had my old drive hooked up when I did the install (WinXP installed on new drive with NTFS, old drive was Win98 with FAT32) I did the above and then I was able to get my data from the old hard drive. Just a suggestion.

Ya it's one of those stupid MS Winblows assumptions. "If I was installed on the master on a NTFS drive then everything must be NTFS if it was in the system from the get go" ..... frickin MicroSlop. Try compudog's suggestion and let us know if it works.

Its expensive, but it works.

Disk Commander

I did a dumbazz and deleted my partition info on my data drive. Used Disk Commander from a DOS prompt. Found the drive, saw the data. Allowed me to either recover the data or attempt to restore the parition information. I decided to restore parition info. Rebooted. Pow. Like nothing had ever happened. After seeing that, i cant speak highly enough of Disk Commander.
Worth it?
Every damned penny.
