Can I setup a raid configuration using a 160 GB maxtor and a 160 GB seagate? Would I gain anything by doing this? What would be the down side? The reason I ask is that I have a maxtor 160 GB drive and have seen some good deals on the Seagates and was thinking that even though I don't need more space right now, I would be nice to get more speed and/or a backup. I am very novice at this so please be gentle.

It is better to use the same drives, but yes you can use different drives and the only drawback would be that if one is slightly smaller than the other, then the total size of your array will be (2 x the smallest drive) less formatting overhead.
. I wouldn't suggest RAID-0 for anyone on a single user system (see the Anandtech and StorageReview analyses of RAID-0 against a single drive solution) - and on RAID-1 the dissimilar drives are even less of an issue.
