i'm running an epox 8k7a and i have a pretty quiet system (yeah, i'm anal) and right now the only loud part on my machine is the fan on the mobo. can this be quieted or am i going to have to wait till i get a new mobo in another year or so when i may try to go 64?

thanks
ty

Do you mean the fan on the North bridge or the fan on the CPU. If CPU, you can get a Speeze HSF w/80mm fan (e.g. 5F263B1M3G at newegg) or get an 80mm to 60mm fan adapter from SVC or maybe newegg.
. For North bridge, you can remove the fan and get a bigger heat sink from places like SVC, which has the Zalman NB heat sink on sale right now for $5.

not the one on the cpu, the very small on on the mobo itself. (i guess that's the northbridge...heh, my knowledge isn't what it should be on the mobo).

thanks for the tip on the zalman heat sink, i'll take a look later tonite (time to head out to take my mom out for her moday gift)

just curious though, i see the screws to take the fan out, what abou the black/red wires?

thanks again for the response

The wires should go to a fan connector on the mobo that just unplugs. Be aware that the north bridge heat sink may be attached to the chip with a glue-like substance. If it is, you need to "gently but firmly" twist (not pull) the heat sink to free it. And then clean off the chip with Acetone.
. You can get acetone disguised as nail polish remover (look for house brand 100% acetone nail polish remover at your local Target, WalMart, etc). While you are at SVC, pick up some Arctic Silver 3 heat sink compound (SVC is about the cheapest place on the web to buy that too) along with the rest of your order.
. Use AS3 instead of the stuff that they send you with the Zalman unless it can't be mounted to your mobo w/ the screws. If it needs to be glued, get the AS glue.

thanks a lot for the response/advice. I really appreciate it.

A bit ago, I replaced my fan on the heatsink and while I was at it I got an alpha 8045 and some arctic silver as well. Sounds like the same thing when applying the heatsink to the cpu.

again, thanks!
