Can I put one dsl account in 2 computers? (sharing same IP)

I dont know if this is the correct forum to post this so I apologize if it is.

Me and my brother would like to get dsl (verizon online), splitting the bill so it would be easier on the wallet. I have a PC and he has a laptop, but would like to put the same dsl account in both computers. This way if I'm play game or doing school work he could just go online on his laptop and vice versa. Is this possible? If so how? I have Win 98 and he uses Win ME.

Also, what type of NIC would work with a laptop? He has a 56k modem currently installed. Is there a USB NIC he could use?

depend on which modem you have. Some of them saves the MAC address (hardware address) of your NIC, and won't allow any other NIC to connect. I don't know which one(s) does that, but perhaps someone else could.

sure, there are plenty of USB network cards for laptops. Linksys, 3Com, etc. all have them. Do a quick searsh on the manufacture's website or an online resaler's website, you'll find plenty.

Another idea is, if you have Win 98 Second Edition, you can do internet sharing, so your brother's laptop will connect through your computer to go online. Or you can buy a DSL-router.

If the laptop has a PCMCIA slot I just got a D-Link NIC from Best Buy for $39.99. I am using a Linksys router to share my network connection. If you have a static IP address you can set that in the router and set the computers to use DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol). If your IP is not static you really don't have to do much except tell the computers to use DHCP. Either way you have to enable DHCP in the router per its instructions. I would recommend the Linksys 4 port router, I bought the 1 port when it first came out and I have to use a hub along with it. If you really want to get fancy you can get the wireless 4 port router and a wireless card for the laptop.

I'd recommend linksys. I have one, really like it. I don't know about netgear or d-link's routers but I know a lot of people have linksys routers.

I use a Linksys at 2 locations. They work flawlessly. I have heard lately that some ISPs that send software updates have been modifying the tcp/ip stack so that you can't use a router? Fortunately my ISP just gives setting information.

I'm in the same position as raystorm is...(except i don't have to pay ).....i already have a hub, and NICs installed.....do i just put the router between my DSL modem and the hub(if i were to get a 1 port router) and run DCHP on each computer? How would that affect them seeing eachother over the network?

..mmm.. looks like the router route is the way to go. My local DSL provider has a nice home network setup and they said they could set it up for me. But one thing... I use Win 98.. my brother uses Win ME. I know WinME has the ICS feature, but regular Win 98 doesnt. Do we both have to use the same OS? Or is there a program I could use that could emulate that ICS feature so that it would work along with Win ME (cause I sure aint installing Win ME on my pc..eek). thanks for all the suggestions..its totally appreciated and helpful.
