It's possible, but it would sound like CRAP. The Altec sub probably uses a 4" woofer (big for a computer desk) which is probably smaller than the full range speakers you have already. If you're on a budget, you can get a bazooka tube with its own amp for less than $200, or if you're really tight, you can get a flea market special :p

well, umm....other than that you wouldn't be able to power it, cuz it runs off of 110 volt ac current....you'd have to buy an inverter just to power it:)

I didn't go into detail for a reason; I'm trying to dissuade him from doing it :p

Are the flea-market specials really bad?? I'm thinking of buying a $40CDN 8in Subwoofer w/box for my '91 Corolla. I don't want killer or really good quality sound. I just want anything that's better than the 2 sh!tty stock speakers that are in the car.

BTW, the place that sells it is the Liquidation Store in Toronto. If you live in Scarborough you've probably gotten flyers for it.

Anyway back to flea-market specials. I'm thinking of buying a $40CDN Sub, a $80CDN Amplifier, and maybe some decent speakers. It should be below $250CDN in total. I don't want to spend anymore on the Corolla.

chooie has some intersting points. as far as the flea market special most of what they carry is no name knock off crap but they can serve a purpose...for example you can buy an isoberic box with two 12" subs in it for like $80.00 but there only rated at like 100watts and the box is of $hitty construction point being if your on a budget and don't care about brand names they can be a good choice just don't expect to get alot of performance out of them.

hehe.. people have interesting ideas these days... Shouldn't be too hard to do if you have the proper equipment and knowledge. But I am guessing you don't cause if you did you wouldn't be asking us ;) I would buy a car made woofer... relatively easy to install and will cost you a little less ;)

I know about those sales.
All their 5hit is pathetic.
I bought a $40 Kicker Impulse and a $140 10inch Orion Xtr in a bandpass box, and they are just perfect for my needs.
My wants, however, are a totally different matter :p

About yoru altec, all you need is a 120v power invertor, and a hookup to your rca outs...that's it.
But you won't get any bass though.
Comp subs (99% of them) are onoly designed to punch between the 60-120hz region, where as real bass goes from 30-90hz :)

Hey Viperoni:: Could you let me know what good deals are at the Liquidation place? Like I said, they have to sound decent and should be cheap. Also they are hooking up to a stock '91 Corolla sound system.

Which Liquidation store did you go to?

I didn't go to the sale, I just saw the ad.
It was at the International Center in Mississauga...
2 weeks ago I think.
They have it like every 3-4 months....

Oh ok. Then where did you buy your stuff from?? I'm trying to find a good store that less stuff at cheap prices. Also, how do you install subs in the trunk? Do you just leave it there? Or do you bolt the box down??
