Can I put my big knife in my checked luggage?

I've got a fairly decent-sized knife that I carry around with me everywhere for protection. It has a 3" blade that's pretty sharp, and looks like something you'd see a bad guy in a movie using. To put it bluntly: It's something that could be used to kill someone without too much effort.

I'm flying out of here for a few days in about 6 hours. For obvious reasons, I can't take my knife with me on the plane. However, I'm wondering if anybody knows if I can put it in my checked luggage. I'm in the U.S. and will be flying within the country. Will the Transport Security Association or whatever they're called remove the knife from my luggage and get rid of it or call me in to talk to them or anything? I can deal with leaving my knife at home, it's just that I'd rather bring it with if that's possible.

Anyone know?

Thanks.

I wouldn't. I'm sure you will be fine without it. Too much of a hassle if they don't allow it if you ask me.

Yup, you can bring all manners of dangerous goods in your checked baggage.
Anything combustible, pressurized, or explosive is prohibited though, and you must declare all firearms.

I've brought knives, swords, etc. from overseas plenty of times.

You do realize that all major airports are now X-raying, opening & inspecting, and running all checked bags through a bomb sniffer now, don't you?

I remember for a time they didn't even allow scissors. Not sure about how things have changed.

decent sized? that's a little sissy knife, afaiac...

i have a 4 incher that i carry for protection. it has a clip which clips to the outside of my belt, but it's actually inside my wasteband, so it's invisible, essentially. actually it clips under my belt, so you only see a small metal piece hanging out inder the belt.

it's pretty nice.

i also carry a small 2 incher for cutting paper, tape, that kind of crap... menial stuff...

for camping i have a 4 inch fixed blade, and a 5 inch folder (buck 110) and a leatherman wave.

i also have a couple swiss army knives, and a few others for other reasons.. (tile/linoleum/carpet), filleting, nighthawk for ..other stuff... ;)

Good lord, both of you carry pansy weapons. I carry a 21" wakizashi, and sometimes a 13" tanto, when I'm out the house. Try fighting me with you little 5" blade then.

If you bring that knife in any means don't expect to make your flight. More than likely you will be detained and questioned. Save yourself the hassel and forget it.

Yes, Mallow is quite full of it.

Knives, firearms, and other non-explosive weapons are allowed in your checked baggage.

Of course he can put in checked baggage, I've had friends with swords in checked baggage. When I fly my knife is always in checked baggage. They don't care because you can't hijack a plane if your knife is down in yous suitcase below the plane.

Yes, no problem.

It's CHECKED luggage, folks. He has no access to it past security. You can put anything that's not explosive in checked luggage, and the only thing you need to notify them of are firearms (unloaded, of course and ammo is banned).

Ever try opening up a laptop? Try snapping the metal keyboard backplane in half and you have a pretty decent weapon. Yet you can bring those on the plane as carry-on....

Side Note: If you travel a lot and have a backpack and get searced often, the security told me if you shake your bag before you put it in one of those trays and put the bag on its side, they probably won't search it.
