Can I put a cpu in a ziplock bag?

Hello. I was wondering if it is safe to keep a cpu in a ziplock bag untouched on a dresser for a week or so? Because I have to RMA my mobo and have nowhere to put it. Is there a chance that it could develop static electricity and not work when my new mobo arrives?

Why the bag? It shouldn't be much of a problem if you want to put in in the bag but I'd hardly call it "protection", so it's not like you even need the bag...

protection as in similar to those anti static bags. Not to protect it if i accidently drop a 1000 page book on it and crush it. Just something to keep it protected better than leaving it out in the open.

What would be better for static is to put it in aluminum foil. Or if you have an anti-static bag, like from a HD or video card.

Ordinary plastic generates static electricity when rubbed even a little. And I'd put it in a little box. Bending a pin on a CPU makes for very time consuming straightening, because the merest bend will make it not align with the socket holes.

Well, the zip-lock bag is not antistatic and can build up charges so it's not going to be that much better than just leaving it there. I've had lots of dimms, CPUs and expansion cards just laying around for weeks at a time and when I used them I've had no problems.

I'd put it in a small cardboard box (like from jewelry, etc.) or even an envelope before I'd put it into a plastic bag. and I'd put it in a drawer where it's not going to get smashed/knocked onto the floor, etc.

yep. Small discharges of static does damage that may not even be noticible but build up over time or may cause future problems.
