Can I put a 256MB memory in a slot only rated for 128MB?

it depends upon the motherboard design and the chipset in use, there is no hard and set answer that is always correct... but in 'most' cases it will work however it will only see one bank of DRAM on said DIMM.

From my experience, I had a Supermicro 440BX board it wouldn't see 256Mb DIMMS. I had to exchange them for 2 x 128Mb DIMMs with a friend.

If you are going to try it make sure you can swap the 256MB DIMMS if you run into problems.

I guess I'll crack it open and try it out. The chip is just laying around anyway.

Thanks guys.

440ZX, technically, can use up to 128 Mbits per SDRAM chip, 128 MBytes per DIMM side, 256 MBytes per DIMM. However, not all BIOSes for these boards know about these.

In other words, use a proper DIMM (you need the "16x8" flavor, 16 chips, each 16Mbits large and 8 bits wide) and try it out. You won't damage anything if your BIOS doesn't handle them.
