I've been toying with the idea of building a very small, custom box to act as a firewall. I'll probably go with something like a micro-ATX motherboard. Space is going to be at a premium in the case, so I'm thinking of using a 2.5" (notebook) hard drive.

Will I be able to connect it to a regular 40-pin IDE interface? Do those things use a standard 40-pin cable? I've never taken a notebook apart, so I have no idea.

Oh, and same for power. Should I be able to plug-and-play with a standard ATX power supply?

Yes, you will be able to use one. However they don't natively hook directly up to a 40pin IDE cable and a molex connector, but they do make adapters that are relatively cheap...i think around $10 or so.
