After doing a little more experimenting with my system I've managed to get this Intel 3.4Ghz, 550 E0 a decent amount higher than stock, but I'm wondering if it is the motherboard, the cpu or my pcie clock that is limiting me currently.
The motherboard is a random MSI OEM board, a 915P, the MS-7091 so I don't really have much in the way of options in the bios, for example I can't find anything to do with the vcore 🙁
Memory are two sticks of 512mb GeiL Value Ram. They come at 200mhz at 2.5, 3, 3, 6 if I remember rightly but I've had then up to about 230 at stock volts before prime starts throwing out errors and locking up. Haven't really looked into changing the timings as my board seems to be resetting them when booting anyway 🙁
The last time I tried overclocking, I had the system up to about 3.8ghz, with the ram at 1:1 which put the ram at about 224mhz along with the fsb
This time I've put it on a divider, pretty much the only other one avaliable on this board, of 5:6, running at 3.983Ghz with the ram at 188mhz and the fsb at 235. This puts my ram underclocked which is why I'm also wondering which of the two overclocks would be better for gaming? I got a slightly lower superpi time with the 4Ghz than the 3.8Ghz.
Anyway, I'm really wondering whether or not I have any chance of pushing it anymore? My temps are fine as far as I can tell, idling around 41 c and loading at about 56 c. This chip used to be hitting 70+ with the stock heatsink anyway so it seems happy enough with heat. With my current overclock of 4Ghz, when I increase the fsb another 4-5mhz I get restarts and lock-ups.
Could this be because of the pci-e lock not being active? In the bios it has "Autodetect PCI-e Clk". It is currently set to enabled, I can switch it to disabled but there are no options for locking it to a set number as far as I can see. I've heard stories of having to up the PCI-e clock along with the fsb so that the fsb is never more than 2.2 times the pci-e clock.
Or is this just the limit of my board/cpu with the stock voltage?
