can I plug this fan in?

so, I'm trying to replace my Tivo's internal fan because the stock fan is on its last legs (and making a damn racket while it dies)... every fan I see on newegg has a 3-pin power connection, though, and the Tivo system board only has 2-pins to plug the fan into.

the stock fan is just a 2-pin (black/red) 60mm fan... if I were to attempt to replace it with a 3-pin (black/red/yellow) fan, would I need to do anything special with the yellow cable? I know that the yellow wire is just to regulate fan speed or something, and I'm a little tempted to just match up the black/red and leave the third hole empty, but I figured I'd check with the AT knowledge base before frying my DVR

Yeah the third wire is just a tach signal and can be left disconnected. The 3 pin female plug might still connect to the header, I know you can connect a 4 pin fan to a 3 pin header and it still works. Really if you don't have a fan lying around, you might as well order the one above, as it is the right size and right number of wires for little cost.

If you do have a fan lying around, then as you correctly guessed the 3rd wire of the fan does not need to be connected. (Should be labeled S+ or tach or similar)
