Can I play network games?

I want to know if I can play LAN games with my friend who has a similar IP address to mine. Suppose my ip is 156.138.1.194 and my friend's ip is 156.138.3.34, is it possible for us to play? Both of us have static IP address. Both of us are not able to ping each other as well........Playing LAN games with my other friend(say 156.138.1.155) was not a problem.......I just want to know if the above scenario is possible........I would be really grateful if someone could explain this problem

What kind of envrionment are you in? Is that at school, from your ISP, at work, where?

With the small amount if information given, the only thing that I see, and you possibly noticed too, is that your second friend appears to be in the same subnet. But that should not affect you not being able to reach someone, unless you were referring to a private network with private IP's. I`m not 100% sure on this, so hopefully Garion or Spidey or ScottMac or nocMonkey, etc. could assist. 🙂

Well, methinks this is a small network created by my ISP. They have purchased a 2Mbps line and are giving connections through this. All they have given me is a network card and a cat5 cable. And with this setup I access the internet. As far as I know, this ISP has three gateways for three different areas. My friend and I am located in different areas. He has a different gateway and I have a different one. But the subnet is same again. Let me say :

My Ip : 156.138.1.194
Friend's IP : 156.138.3.34
My Gateway : 156.138.1.254
Friend's Gateway : 156.138.3.254

Still clueless on why it does not ping. Is it possible?

You might want to try doing a traceroute to his IP address and have him do the same to yours. It might be able to provide a little more insight as to where the problem lies. It could be a routing issue with the ISP (but not likely). Maybe you or your friend has a firewall that essentially drops the ping requests. Let us know if you find out anything else.
