Not sure what category this goes so here it is.........

I have had Max Payne installed on my PC for a while but never even tried to play it. Well now that I upgraded my Graphics card, I finally started to play last night and it KICKS ASS. Of course the graphics aren't Superb 2003, but they are still pretty good. Anyway, I've been having trouble playing the game as it seems I can only play with the CD-ROM disc in the drive which I have, but it's badly scratched. Often, I will copy scratched CD-ROM disc's and this helps, but for some reason I can't copy the Max Payne 1 disc.

Anyone know of a patch or something else I can use/enable to play MP1 without the CD?? Thanks

These type of topics are usually ripped apart by un-trusting members who will immediately label you a warez whore.

Under the assumption that you have a legal copy you should be able make a back up copy.

1. make a ISO image of the disc. You can use clonecd or nero if you have this. What you are doing is creating a image of your disc on your hard drive.

2.Install a virtual cdrom. You can download Daemon tools. Once installed you can mount the iso image that you used and you should be able to use the image as if it was a cdrom.

3. install the game if not already done. You will need a no-cd check hack of maxpayne to be able to use backup copies or run the game of your hardrive using the image you created.
this is the truly challenging part since you may have to hunt for the maxpayne no-cd crack in places where porn is abundant.

4.place the downloaded no cd crack into your installation folder (copy and paste) the game now should not look for the original disc when played.

good luck

Boy this is a lot more work/effort than I first thought I may be worth. And BTW, I definitely have the full retail version of MP1. For some reason with Nero Express 5.5 I can only start a ISO copy of the CD-Rom disc and then it craps out at about 600K. I also try to do a disc to disc copy in Nero and this is the only game I have ever gotten errors on my Burner. Man, they must have some kick ass copy protection scheme.

What I was able to do, was copy all of the files using Windows Explorer into a folder and then use NeroEx to make a data CD from that. It was an exact byte copy for each byte. So then I tried to play the game with the CD-Rom disc I made and the game said "Please Insert Correct Disc." I dunno, maybe I'll try to use Roxio Platinum and see if that software can copy the CD for me?

Thanks guys for the suggestions

It won't work with roxio that way. Just copying over the files or even making an ISO with Nero won't include the cd's copy protection/disc authorization/whatever the hell it's called. Some burners with the right software can do a true exact copy, IIRC Lite-On's and some Mitsumi's with CloneCD or Alcohol 120%. What you're better off doing is getting a no-cd patch for it.

also when creating the iso image set it to read as slow as possible 4x or 8x .

another useful tool is clonyxxxl it will tell you want cd protection the disc has and what settings to read and write.

some cdwriter or dvd drives are not able to copy safe disc 2 which is what maxpayne is i believe.

good luck

Well for what its worth, another ATF member told me about CD-emulation software so that the game would point to the virtual drive mounting the ISO image. Unfortunately I would just get the same errors as before. So then I tried CDclone and I was able to successfully copy the original Max Payne CD-Rom. And apparently it also copied the security info. that Nero and Easy CD couldn't detect on the MP CD-Rom.

But thanks all for your suggestions. I never thought something seemingly so simple to do, can be a bit tedious just to get a copy of the CD. BUT the ATF'ers come to the rescue!!

Thanks guys/gals.

go to pc fixes.

THANKS MAN!! That worked and is better than me having to go through the billion steps of copying the CD or creating a virtual CD-Rom drive. All I had to do was delete the old MP Shortcut and then re-add the command line switches I had with the original shortcut.

Thanks guys for all of your help.
