Can I play HL2 with this system?

I read that the game requires a 1.2Ghz proc w/ 256mb of RAM. But as you can see my processor is 200Mhz too slow and I have no overclocking options on my mobo. Just want to make sure so I'm not screwed. Don't want to buy and not have it work since you cannot return opened computer software. 😛

That would be kinda hard if he didn't want to sell his Steam account. I think the CD Key is forever tied to his Steam account, so someone wouldn't be able to buy his retail discs and unlock the game thru Steam.

don't play it online first see if after installation wheter it will run or not on your specs without going online or signing up for steam. ps I don't know if it needs to be activated through steam or not to run

It has to be activated through steam to run so he cant try that

remember, most modern games are likely estimating clockspeeds in P4 performance terms. A 1.3GHz P4, for example, is slower than a 1GHz PIII. Personally, i think it would work, although you have to force the DirectX 8.1 path rather than the DX9.0 path, since the card only has PS1.1 rather than 2.0. It probably won't look that good, though. It's probably getting to be time to upgrade soon. I'm just now upgrading from a 700MHz Athlon and a TI4200.

Thanks for all the replies. Don't have a friend with the game. Two people in the thread goweasel linked ran it with a PIII 600Mhz and another with a PIII 900!

Gobucks: I was thinking the same thing also - the clock speed being in terms of a P4. So it should work, I'll let you guys know tomorrow. *Crosses fingers*

Well he doesn't actually need to force anything; HL2 autodetects every card out there and runs it at a given setting; The Ti4200 will run at what it can: DX 8.0 (or is it DX 8.1?).

It will run but he may have to turn effect quality down.

Plus without DX9 you lose detail on the water and other DX9 shader effects.

I have a P3 1GHZ. Its pretty rough playing CS: Source, I get around 10-15 fps/s, its definately CPU bound, but HL2 might run a little smoother.

What video card are you running?

Hello there, i have some problems running HL-2 on my system, which is:

Celeron 2,8Ghz
Asus P4-GV Mainboard
Aopen 6600GT AGP
512 MB
Forceware 70.90
Win XP (SP1)

I'm wondering if the CPU-dependency of HL-2 is so huge to give my system (with all the medium settings on 1024x768) in the Anand-Timedemo-C17 an average of only 17.90fps. Is a Celeron with 2.8GHZ such a bottleneck? And even with a reduced resolution (800x640) and the lowest settings i get only a mediocre increase in speed (4-5 fps)! So waht can i do in order to get a decent framerate in HL-2? Buying a new Cpu with better L1-L2-cache (P4)?

Thanks for your help!

yes probably copen hagen, i remember when i upgraded from a celeron 2ghz to a p4 2.26 it was muuuuch better in games.

A Celeron is a bottleneck in that system as they are very bad at gaming. If you have a Celeron D it will be less of a bottleneck than if you have an older one. But it will still be a bottleneck.
