Can I play an .avi file on my DVD player?

My friend downloaded some videos and he plays them on his DVD player to watch on his big screen tv. I downloaded a long movie, it was an .avi file. I burned the file to a cd and tried it in my DVD but it does not play. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

he probably download it mpg file and burn it to VCD format. You can use Nero or NTI CDMAKER to make a VCD but you would have to convert .AVI to MPG first though.
