Can I play a Hong Kong DVD in a USA DVD Player?

Dear any Tech Support Helpers:

Please help me here. I read that the standalone DVD players from USA cannot read Hong Kong DVDs, but I was wondering if there was some kind of software I would be able to install so I could at least play it in my Computer DVD Player???

I have a Samsung 612 DVD Player in my computer if that helps...

Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about legit HK DVDs or the bootleg HK DVDs? Bootleg HK DVDs (for anime and such) typically are region-free. I've heard they play pretty well on USA DVD players, though I don't have a 'real' standalone DVD player to test it on (I have a PS2, which is known not to perform well with dual-layered DVDs).

If you're talking legit HK DVDs set to the Chinese region code (forgot what number), then no, it won't play on an American player unless you hack the firmware and change/remove the region code. I don't know where to get said firmware, but it may not be too hard to find.

If you want to go the DVD-ROM drive route, then you're in a little bit better luck. Most DVD drives (as I understand it) will let you CHANGE the region code a certain number of times before 'locking in' to a set code. If all you want to watch on your DVD-ROM drive is Chinese DVDs, then you can set the region code to match and voila. There're also region-free firmware drivers for DVD drives, but I don't know where to find these either.

There is a very simple way to find this file and that is to go to any search engine and look for it. I just did and got a ton of hits on how to do this.
Search engines are wonderfull things.

Well, like other people are saying here, it basically depends. If you bought a DVD player from a company like Sony, for instance, you will only be able to play Region 1 or Region-free DVD's in it. But, since Sony is not the only manufacturer of DVD players and many companies saw the huge benifit of not region locking their players, there are many DVD players that are available which are region free themselves and thus, can play any region DVD's. Do a quick search with your favoriate search engion for "region free DVD player" and it will be sure to turn you up a nice list of players that are available that are region free (all of mine are except for my Playstation 2, but there is a hack for that 🙂 )

i have a samsung dvd rom in my computer

have a sony standalone dvd

have a dvd/vhs combo from "Go Video"

what should i do so i can play the dvds on these... and another question... do some dvd player softwares like cyberlink powerdvd or windvd have this decoder for the hong kong dvd?

depends on the dvd:
legal hollywood movie hk version dvd is region 3.
legal hk movie, karaoke dvd should be region all.
pirate dvd is region all of course.
legal tvb tv drama dvd rental in the US is region 1.

all us standalone dvd player is region 1 - only can play region 1 or region all dvd, except Sony's first generation dvd player in the US - the $1000 model (at that time) has switch inside to change region, some with hidden menu - Apex brand's first dvd player in the US, some with flaw - recent Daewood's machine manufacturered before 05/2001, etc.
